On-the-job monitoring is getting out of control. As we’ve previously covered, you can’t even let one loose at work without running the risk of becoming a viral sensation!

While some forms of monitoring are more annoying than anything (what do you mean I have to be green on Teams?), others are downright weird. For example, this Redditor is convinced that his bosses are keeping a tab on his poop times.

In the photo posted to r/whatisit, user Scotttyy shows a device attached to the bathroom door at his work. “Does my work know when I’m shiddin?” he innocently asks in the title.

In the comments, users said they weren’t sure if the office knew whether Scotttyy was pooping — but darn it, he could make them know. “Shit with the door open and show them,” stated a user. “If they come to check on ya, stare them right in the eye with an intense angered look,” added another. “Do the pro move and crawl under the door,” offered a third.

Naturally, this was also reposted to r/antiwork, where users decried the device as surveillance culture gone mad. Some users even said that they’ve had similar devices in their workplaces: “My last workplace had a camera on the entrance to the toilet and they did time you. I got pulled into a meeting over a 6 minute and something like 17 second shit to ask for an explanation.”

Eventually, commenters were able to figure out that the device was a “wireless reed switch or sensor,” which basically just allows people to tell whether a door is open or closed. The reason for this sensor? According to OP, there was once an in-office pooping app.

Basically, the device started as a way to help people who needed to drop a deuce, and ended with people calling it out for being weird. As one commenter summarized the situation, “Leave it to us nerds to overengineer a problem and make everyone uncomfortable in the process.”
