There are many parts of the world where pedestrian streets and car streets are one and the same. There are some places where this system works (Japan), and others where it doesn’t (everywhere else).

The problems with this arrangement come when people *have* to be in the street or, in the worst cases, when they have to move something. Traveling on a road with both street and people while carrying something can be a nightmare, as this guy learned when he tried to move several long pieces of wood and ended up setting up his own trip wire.
