Unless you’ve been living under a rock or hate both sports and live music, you’ve probably heard of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s blossoming romance. Swift has been seen at several Kansas City Chiefs games, cheering Kelce on from a private box, but before the two had even met, Kelce tried to shoot his shot on Swift’s home turf — the Eras Tour.

Kelce attended one of Swift’s Eras Tour dates in Kansas City, going so far as to craft a friendship bracelet for Swift with his phone number on it. Unfortunately, Kelce wasn’t able to meet Swift before or after the show, but he later shared the anecdote on the podcast he hosts with his brother, leading to a flood of articles about the athlete’s failed attempt to shoot his shot.

Kelce got the last laugh, though, since he and Swift are now, presumably, dating, if their many public appearances together are anything to go by. This has led to what some are calling the “Travis Kelce effect” — i.e., guys publicly shooting their shots with the women of their dreams.

A good recent example is a guy named Jake who posted a TikTok inviting influencer Emily Billings to join him at a “black tie, rooftop, Gatsby party” because he needed a plus one. Preempting her response of, “I don’t even know who you are,” Jake offered three reasons Billings should accompany him to the party: 1) it’s a black tie event and who doesn’t like getting dressed up?; there’ll be a bottomless champagne and an open bar; and 3) the party sounds super unique and will probably be a lot of fun.

Billings stitched the video, ending it with a message asking Jake to send her an Instagram DM. Despite her comments being flooded with requests for an update as to whether she actually attended the party, Billings has kept quiet on the subject, only responding to someone commenting, “GATSBY ROOFTOP PARTY UPDATE OR I WILL DROP OUT OF COLLEGE” with a laughing monkey emoji.

Despite the lack of closure as to whether Jake’s attempt to shoot his shot worked or not, commenters were impressed by his brazenness, with several commenting that they love this new “Travis Kelce era” we’re living in.

While not every attempt at shooting your shot will be as successful as Kelce’s, the old adage is true, you miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.
