Earlier this week, the City of Detroit installed massive letters spelled “D-E-T-R-O-I-T” across Interstate 94. Unfortunately for the city, the actual installation is another massive L for a city that’s well-accustomed to taking Ls.

In short, the letters look like shit. They’re uneven, relatively small and devoid of pretty much any character. Great use of $400,000, boys!

Thankfully, I’m not alone in feeling this way. Pretty much everyone involved in the project has mild to negative thoughts on the letters, which Mayor Mike Duggan says were the brainchild of city general services director Brad Dick. “He said, ‘I want to do something besides the boring Welcome to Detroit signs. I want to do this,’” Duggan recalled, per the Metro Times. “I said, ‘Sure, Brad. I’m more interested in you getting the trash up off the freeway.’”

Too bad he ended up with more trash on the freeway, huh?

The mood against the sign is so bad, in fact, that local rapper GMAC CASH took it upon himself to record a diss track for the sign.

The verse is filled with straight bars, ranging from “They done ordered us a sign off fucking Wish” to “I thought our sign was going to look like Hollywood; that’s probably why they put this bitch right by the hood.”

Love the sign or hate it (we hate it), the sign is now part of Detroit’s storied history, just in time for the NFL Draft. If you’re in the city for the draft, stop by the sign — and give it a good kick for us.
