Columbia University Is Now Just Telling Students to Let A.I. Write Their Papers

Glad to see we’ve all given up.

Every month, it seems like there’s a new article about how everyone is using A.I. to automate every single part of their lives. This has become an especially big problem in education, where students are using A.I. to write papers, then feeding them to a professor who uses A.I. to grade them.

Most universities have tried their best to fight against this. However, some have completely caved and are now not only allowing students to use A.I., but openly encouraging it.

One such university is New York’s Columbia University. Recently, Columbia announced what it calls “CU-GPT.” This is a generative A.I. program that the university says is “specifically designed for the Columbia community.” To that end, the university advertises that it can “enhance productivity, innovation and collaboration across the university.”

How? Well, according to, again, *Columbia’s own website*, it can do this by offering services like “summarizing information” and “writing essays.”

To be clear, Columbia’s own policies on A.I. say the exact opposite of this. According to a different part of the university’s website, “absent a clear statement from a course instructor granting permission, the use of Generative A.I. tools to complete an assignment or exam is prohibited.”

Did they think this through? Will they even be able to tell if a student uses A.I., given that it seems like professors are using it, too? More importantly, is literally any college degree going to be valid from now on if all the students are using university-approved A.I. programs?

At this point, why don’t we all save some time and let students straight up buy their degrees? At least that’s more honest!
