Finally getting your license, no matter your age, is always a cause for celebration. More freedom! More nights out where you don’t have to worry about making it home before the trains stop running! More road trips! You’d probably celebrate by taking advantage of your newfound freedom and going for a drive, right?

One Canadian man did just that, but forgot one crucial aspect: You still need to follow the law. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old was so excited about passing his test and getting his license that he decided to crack open a cold one before speeding home down the highway, going as fast as 30 miles per hour above the speed limit.

Worse still, as he was speeding home, he passed an unmarked police vehicle, which registered his extreme speed and eventually pulled him over. According to the police, he was also weaving in between other vehicles in a “careless manner.”

Constable Ian Michel told the media, “I can’t even begin to understand why someone would think that drinking a beer in their vehicle while driving is a smart idea, let alone a novice driver who should be well versed on the rules of the road.”

In the end, the man made it less than half an hour as a licensed driver. Ultimately, his license was suspended for 30 days, and he was charged with stunt driving, careless driving, having a BAC above zero as a novice driver, driving with an open liquor container and several other offenses.

As Michel put it, “These are not simple errors in judgment, they are choices being made that put the lives of other drivers and pedestrians at risk. Simply put, drivers like this kill people and don’t belong on our roads.”
