Long before the popular tourist destination of Lahaina on Hawaii’s Maui island had been charred by ongoing wildfires, the beloved town was full of lush flora, fauna and life.
As the ongoing blaze continues to devastate the seaside community, several Hawaii locals and travelers have taken to Twitter to share photos of Lahaina before and after flames devastated the area.
“Maxar satellite images show how Lahaina in Hawaii looked before the fires and what was left of the city as a result - the resort was almost completely destroyed by fire,” Twitter news account @Sprinter99800 wrote alongside a video showing two aerial shots of the town. “The fires in Hawaii have killed 36 people and injured dozens.”

As the images began making the rounds on social media, several paid their condolences to locals.
“Absolutely heartbreaking,” wrote @VeinsOne, describing the footage as “a surreal sight.”
“This is devastating,” wrote @1964Leafs. “I was in Lahaina just last month. Never would I have imagined a disaster of this magnitude would strike such a beautiful, historic place.”
Though fires may still be burning on Lahaina, we can only hope the beloved community can rebuild quickly.
