On TIkTok, people are sharing videos of themselves simply “rotting in bed” with “POV” captions in a trend called “bed rotting,” which is simply a wellness trend that seeks to rebrand laying in bed doing absolutely nothing, perhaps as a response to girl boss hyper-productivity culture.

Sleep scientist @braincraft shares videos that fact-check trends, and in her “bed rotting” videos she hypes the trend describing it as “wasting away under a blanket and the nothingness is your best life.” She goes on to say “Bed rotting is 100% backed by science, just sink into your sheets and stay there.”

The comments on her video are incredibly relatable as @huevofritoquemao said, “My depressive episodes are getting rebranded.”

A video uploaded by @park333r is a good example of what the typical “bed rotting" videos look like. It features a single clip of themselves laying in bed captioned with “its okay to rot in bed all day.”

TikTok creators like @k14nn4 are jumping onto the bed rotting trend by posting “Get Ready With Me” videos of themself putting on outfits and makeup before getting into bed, ready to “rot”. The Marie Antoinette-esque video adds a new “aesthetic” to the trend, one that @lizziedotcom commented, “This isn't rotting, this is deteriorating.”

Cheers to everyone who has been ahead of this trend by rotting in bed with depression for years. Reframing it as a form of self-care saves us all from self-loathing as we head into Rot Girl Summer.
