When you think of invasive, problematic species, your mind probably turns to something like mosquitoes.

However, pretty much any animal can be a problem if it tries hard enough. Case in point: fisheries in Southeast Alaska are currently being overrun with sea otters.

According to local reports, fishermen are complaining about a scourge of sea otters eating all of the seafood in the area. This includes, but is not limited to, Dungeness crabs, geoducks, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, clams and pretty much anything that lives on the ocean floor.

This wasn’t always an issue. Sea otters were once locally extinct until they were reintroduced to help stabilize otter populations in nearby areas that were dying in nuclear tests (it’s a long story). Later legislation prevented people from hunting them, so now, sea otters have basically taken over the place.

Now, locals are begging the federal government to act, hoping that easing certain restrictions will allow them to get rid of enough otters to recover their fishing hauls. Until that happens, however, they’ll be stuck giving over a portion of their potential paychecks to the adorable furry menaces.
