A woman in Korea handed over around $7,000 USD to an internet stranger after he claimed that he was an astronaut “in space on a spaceship right now,” but that he was “under attack and in need of oxygen.”
Before we judge, the woman involved was 80 years old. Still, one would think that even the octagenarians among us would be able to suss out that a) there’s probably not a lot of internet in space, and b) if an astronaut is running out of oxygen, the limiting factor is definitely not “having enough money to buy oxygen from the in-space oxygen store.
Local media have now reiterated that, if you meet someone online and they ask for money, you shouldn’t send it. Also, oxygen is free for astronauts. Just a perk of the job!
